Reused sounds

This might sound weird but i'm playing Torchlight II right now and i'm hearing atleast 4-5 sounds that are also in Valheim.

Why is Valheim using so many reused sounds? Or is Torchlight II using sounds from a list of stock sounds? In any case, you may want to uh, not do that.

To be specific I hear the following sounds (might be hard to describe some of them):
-In Valheim, a torch or lightsource being fueled with resin / random ambient sounds near "mana vents" in Torchlight II are the same.
-In Valheim, a Boar making grunt noises / enemies making grunt noises in Torchlight II are the same.
-In Valheim, a Leech making bite noises / enemies making bite noises in Torchlight II are the same.
and a few others, but not too many.

You mean the imp's/baron of hell's fireball, lol

Actually I am referring to the Icon of Sin from Doom II. I'm sure the fireball sounds are used a lot too. If that makes you laugh out loud, good for you I guess?

Not like the Id guys were driving Ferraris yet when they made Doom, so no surprise they were using stock sounds, but I think thats more the norm for the entire sound design sector rather than an exception. What I am saying is that sounds get re used not only out of economic necessity, but also in tribute to previous work.
There are plenty of sounds from Doom I have heard in other media, not just games. These stock sounds have been around for ages by todays standard, not really surprising either lol

I would take the original post more seriously if it had contained some new words. Just all the same old words reused.

There is a whole tradition or culture amoung sound designers to reuse old sounds. Another one like the Wilhelm scream is the 'whoosh' sound from the final boss in the original doom. I hear it in movies and TV productions regularly.

Im pretty sure Ive heard the death sigh for blobs in some old game - also used for a blob type monster.

Yeah for Indie games it's normal to use either cheap or royalty free music/sounds. The music in Kerbal Space Program is also royalty free music for example, which a few other games also use which feels a bit weird if you know the music only from one game and then hear it in another.

Also the vast, vast majority of assets in Doom, not just the sounds, were lightly or heavily-edited stock sounds

Yeah, it's very common with sounds, music, etc.

I remember one time watching a cooking show (I think it was Chopped?) and while the host was laying out whatever the next challenge was, they were playing the music from the Saints Row 2 vehicle customization menu.

Those are stock sounds, people can pretty much use them for free and if they fit, why not use them.

Stock sounds that are free to use/low cost, are common with many small developers using Unity.
There is a whole store for Unity assets made by various sources. (99% of Empyrion for example, from sounds to graphics to models is made using Unity store resources).
