I'm also wondering how do you get tar that's stuck out? Is this where a tame lox comes in handy?

Needle arrows are really strong and only require like 3 hits to kill them. Other arrows probably work too but I used them.

Regarding the stuck tar (and other items): I just mined a channel to drain the tar away. That allowed me to collect all the tar from the bottom of the tar pit.

Well you have to drain the pit,when you clear it just start digging around till all the tar is drained! make a path for the tar to escape and then just sit and wait :)

They always launch their attack after jumping or just every 10 secs or so. The trick I found was running up to them inbetween attacks and 2 shotting them with Frostner (the spirit damage is very helpful).
