Since when did modders start charging fees?
I recently came across the modded Valheim servers of Jiroc The Viking, and it concerns me that you have to be a VIP member of his Patreon to access a modification of Iron Gates video game, Valheim. Feel free to share your thoughts... in the meantime, the developers need only look up "Valheim" on Youtube and it will be one of the top three video results.

I agree that it is okay to charge people for hosting fees, the use and maintenance of servers, etc. How many of you actually looked at buddy's application? Do that and then reconsider this topic of discussion.
I mean with respect to the Nexus Gaming Community, the developers of Enderal: Forgotten Stories, and almost every old school DOOM mod ever made - what part of open source development do you guys not understand? The guy in question is stealing the company's thunder, and trying to one-up them, yet you offer not the slightest bit of support to the people whom you have already invested in.
Thank you, and good bye.

Well, I see one of the Devs (and/or Forum Moderator) already answered you, and Veseljko explained "who" Jiroc is. I just wanted to say that even if a Modder was asking for Patreon payment to join a server, I don't have an issue with that. There have been a couple of modders that I have downloaded a few different mods from and because I like their work, I have donated a small amount of money to them.

Jiroc is not a modder but a youtuber/content creator/promoter of the game.He owns several servers and invest a lot of his time and money to run them and keep them fun to play. If i understood correctly he was one of early game testers who remained loyal to the game for years. IG is familiar with his work and developers sometimes join his servers. Just browse his YT channel and you will see interviews with devs.
I highly suggest to everyone who wants to know more about this game and/or to pick up some good ideas to subscribe to his channel. You will find a lot of useful informations there as well as all of the latest game related news (including detailed descriptions of new patches and hidden patch notes).
He is the only one that kept me interested in the game for such a long time. His channel is inexhaustible source of great ideas and fun projects.
I missed the kick-off of the first season on his servers and didn’t want to join late (which was a mistake as i missed a lot of fun). Now I’m joining for the second season for sure. It looks fantastic and I believe 10$ is a fair price to discover a whole new dimension of this game and to play with a lot of fun and friendly players.

You aren't paying to access the modification of Valheim. They only give access to people who are VIP patreon members. It's entirely up to them who they give access to on their privately run server.
If you look at their page they don't have any required mods for the servers (except on the hardcore one). In fact, a quick read of the page says that the idea is to stick to a vanilla experience and they only allow approved client-side QoL mods. As far as I can see every single one of those mods is on Nexus and free.
Edit: Also, many modders who I like the content from in other games have either a patreon or a paypal to donate to them with. Which they entirely deserve. They've done work and we're enjoying it, they should be rewarded.

Sounds like there might be a bit of a misunderstanding at least on my part. I thought the OP was talking about mods in general, but it may be more a 'white listed server' that requires membership.
Sure someone will clear it up.

Server owners often try to rake in some money from their server community to pay for upkeep costs and make it worth running.
Modders, too, deserve to be paid for their work. A lot of modders just do things for hobby due to just wanting to do something themselves and yet people still use what they put out and act as entitled as if they paid $60 for it, just exploiting the generous nature of someone's passion project. May as well stop letting it just go for free, mods take a lot of time and effort to make.

You should have separated your argument between charging to run a server and charging to use their mods on your own game as they are 2 completely different things and it isn't really clear what is being done here but ultimately, I don't see an issue charging for either.
Most good server communities across many games charge money. This game in particular requires a lot of admin work because many resources do not respawn so admins need to manually respawn a lot of things in the game world in addition to this game being really easy to grief in. Being admin in this game is more work than I have seen in any other game, I certainly wouldn't do it for free.

Some of us modders have spent £100's to £1000's in the Unity Asset store, just saying....

Since mods were created, its not a new concept.
If you dont want to pay for a mod then dont do it.
Alot of work is put into his servers it looks like, so him expecting atleast a little compensation isnt outrageous in the slightest.

Most modders I know create mods that will enhance THEIR game-play, things they want to see in a game they are playing, and they have no qualms sharing their work so others can experience the game as they do.
Some modders just enjoy modding; a hobby.
And there are other modders who would like to turn their work into a living which is obviously their option. So you see such things as the Patreon situation you mention.
I would guess if you, as a modder, wanted maximum exposure with hopes some developer might take interest in your work (which has happened a lot) paid mods might limit such exposure UNLESS those mods were exceptionally executed and drove traffic to your paid site.
But a modder must always be mindful of copyright/intellectual property rights infringement issues, especially if they are taking payment for mods, that a developer might pursue depending on what the mod actually does.
However using a site like Patreon a modder can sometimes tenaciously skirt these issues by claiming their supporters are not buying 'mods', but merely supporting the modder themselves regardless of the modders current endeavors.

I don't think modding has anything to do with it beyond being the "in" place to be for the "show".
No servers are public or owned by IG... all servers are paid for by players. If someone wants to charge to be on their server it seems to be their right since they are paying for it.
If they can create an environment that attracts people for whatever reason then why not?
If it was just the game then why would people pay more for a certain place? So it isn't really the game itself they are paying there to be with.
I wouldn't personally and wonder why people do, but if they want to it's no skin off my nose.

If you look on youtube you will find him on there with build servers and resource servers USING mods hes not the modder. He does the servers for his channels patreon followers but it still cost to have several servers up 24/7 so why not charge.

People charge for mods now? Damn, that has not happened in WoW for over a decade, but in this case you are paying for the privilege to play on his private servers, which IMO is his business.
