Diving
Hello and sorry.
I am 100% sure other have asked this but I'm on the phone/Steam app and couldn't find the search (and rather ask and converse and share ideas rather than "Just Google it").
Is diving a thing after X points in swimming?
Ideas:
1) Harpoons, or spears/polearms providing the same function
2) Treasure, herbs/plants a la Witcher 3
3) Caves, "dungeons" or whatnot
Any takes?

But in rags or troll hide? Hmmm? 🤔
Leather armor of any kind would be incredibly heavy as well.
Rags, IE - Nothing, yeah maybe, but this is ice cold Scandinavian waters... the temp of the water alone would kill a person trying to dive, in rags or armor
I agrre mostly. I have personally dived in scandinavian waters, and it wasn't fun. But I'm still here!
What if you could work up an "Endurance" to it? As you do with "Running", "Jumping" and so on?
Wait...? "Swimming"?

No diving here, and the idea of diving in full armor is just making me giggle a lot.
But swimming on the surface in full iron armour is fine? I think you would diving weather you wanted to or not. You might just never come back up again.
Realism only has to go so far, magic is not real, dragons and trolls are not real. Tree magically turning them selves into boards on collapse is not real. Diving in full armour with some sort of magical buff or food or magic item seems just a realistic as the rest of it.

Thalassophobia? Wow :-) Fancy word for chickensheet :-) due to the fact i suffer from Thalassophobia i am very much in favor of an underwater biome, as long as tools to have a chance at survival down in the deeps is provided.
Subnautica had me so anxious every time the game wanted me to go deeper... and deeper..
10/10 would cold-sweat and get frightened again.

yikes and those with Anatidaephobia are gonna have a bad time
diving might be an idea to get sunken stuff in the ocean yeah, but diving thru dungeons in valheim sounds not so fitting imho
Anatidaephobia - scared to be watched by ducks
i personally have a bad feeling when it comes to height in real life
dont feel well there so i do not attempt to climb high up all the day
ingame ill do it all without issues - realising its just a game

Currently you cannot dive. Don't know why that is still not the case, but I hope it will result in a cool underwater biome mechanic - maybe you can get some breather device from the merchant and underwater will be a high level biome?
That would be so cool...

Ooh! That sounds quite good. Or some plant to breathe longer? 🤔 thinking of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire for some reason, when Harry gets gills for the challenge.
Could be cool.
Mind you, I came into Valheim after finishing up Witcher 3 and one of my favorite missions is one where you can dive deep down in the ocean with some help from a companion at the time (keeping it non-spoiler boi).
It's also one of the things I tried to do the second I hit water in Valheim 😂 diving that is

I just want Iron Boots, so that I can walk on the ocean floor and have an easier time building docks!

there is a diving mod. It works well enough, i expect diving to be added during the ship update.

This is a great idea! I love it in a sort od sense! But then again it's vikings we're talking about. It's Valheim, not Steamheim (incoming pun).
Would the boots be an expendable item? Can you bring them with you back, should you be able to!? Or do you slip out and leave them at the ocean/river floor? Is there a timelimit to them?
A point I bring up sligthly in another thread:
Would heavier armor let you sink more than rags? Isn't iron heavier than leather? 🤔

Diving would be cool, as would being able to swim normally without drowning.
