A Potentially Dumb Question?

Ok, at nearly 150h of playing, I still haven't figured out how, if I have both wood and fine wood in my inventory, I can build with the fine wood instead of the ordinary wood? It won't let you right-click select the fine wood to build architectural stuff with it.

Ok, that's what I was afraid of. I thought, though, that I read somewhere on here that people were building things like bridges and such with fine wood to avoid the damage from the elements, and wondered why I couldn't do so myself.

Thanks, guys.

Could be a mod they are using, but vanilla, nope.

That would be nice, sometimes I need to make something basic outside (eg simply a set of steps to my door) and it's irritating how they weather immediately the second it rains.

Not only irritating but idiotic. The ancient Norse were very, very good at preserving wood from the elements. See this article for a discussion of how they kept their wooden churches from rotting and falling down: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/stave-church-tar-conservation

They were so good in fact that nothing will weather past 50% , pretty impressive =) Seriously though , I kinda like the weathered look, especially on my wooded docks.

Just be careful though, fine can burn to make coal, as I have found the hard way more than once.

Only thing I've found that can use both is the charcoal kiln. In a hurry once, I wasted a dozen or so fine by mistake just clicking the 'E' without watching.

Fine Wood is not specifically a replacement for Wood, you don't replace certain items in the crafting recipe for another, what you need to build items is static. The wooden walls will forever look like regular wooden walls, walls made of Fine Wood would require the devs to introduce Fine Wood walls in a future update.

Fine wood is used to make certain bows, weapons, boats, furniture, portals, etc.

No, the items you build have specific recipes. If the recipe does not call for fine wood then you cannot use fine wood. Similarly, if the recipe calls for fine wood then you cannot use ordinary wood unless the recipe calls for that as well.
