Can Someone Please

...explain the use of the bloody hoe? If there was ever an unintuitive tool, that's the one.

Thanks!

So ahhm... what exactly is the issue with the hoe? That thing is just self explainatory xD

You use it on different spots and after that its easy to tell how it works.

But hey you get a credit for finding a nee topic to cry about. Cant see those teleport metals threads anymore.

I want to say this message exists within the game already somewhere. It's not from the bird and might be a loading screen hint but I really feel I read this in game...somewhere.

That phrasing be a bit confusing for peeps to understand.
Clicking = Level the ground (either up or down) to the height you're standing at.
Shift+Clickng = Level the ground to where you're clicking.
Just trying to help :)

I find it easiest when I'm making roads/paths to start from the lowest point in a bit of terrain and walk along with the hoe a bit in front of me as I'm walking uphill to where I want to take it, that way I make a really smooth kind of groove in the ground with an easy slope to pull a cart along.

Also, if you find a bit of ground with a bump in the middle, you probably have stone underneath and want to mine it then re-flatten. If you get a chunk missing the ground when trying to level upwards, you need to fill it (and have a workbench nearby, which can be annoying). That's why I tend to go from low to high with my paths. Easier to mine out a bump than try to fill an area you can't raise enough.

Right click to select your options.
You can level or make a path.
To raise ground you need stone and a nearby workbench.
To pave roads you need a stone cutter.

When leveling ground you will raise the ground to the level you are standing on. However, if you press shift and click, you will make a slope from/to.

Not much more to it than I can think of atm.

Oh..ya...the hoe will only raise or lower so much...you may need to use a pickaxe as well.

The Hoe is definitely NOT intuitive. Iv'e seen many videos of Valheim gameplay where they equip the hoe, to flatten ground, and start running around randomly clicking the ground, which of course, is the wrong way to go about it. If ever there were a time when the "tutorial" Raven was needed it would be the first time a player equips the Hoe... Even a message that says "While flattening ground, the spot you click will raise or lower to match the spot you are standing on", which would go a long way for a new user to understand how it works.

I've noticed that there's a 'tail' sometimes extending from the center crosshair a varying distance. I'm assuming this is some kind of indicator, but I'm unable to determine what it indicates. Have you guys noticed this, too?

That indicator shows you the difference in height between the place you are standing and the place you are aiming the cursor... the arrow wont show if its level or same height.

I thought that's probably what it was. What wasn't apparent was that the tool will level to the spot you're standing on, so the tail will either raise or lower depending on your height differential to the area being leveled. I'd really like to see a little more thought put into the way this tool behaves and displays.

I see not problem with it at all, you use it to lower ground, sometimes a pick is needed, other times you need the How to raise the ground, the Pathen is a small path and doesn't really move the dirt up/down

I usually end up putting down wood floor tiles and slowly, carefully getting it as close to level as possible from there. Its tricky sometimes even with the indicator and all.
