I don't get the cost/benefit of farming tar
You want to build a house, you chop some wood. You want stone walls or a stone path, you split some rocks. You want an iron gate, you mine some iron. But to get one shingle for the roof of your house that might need 50 shingles, you have to kill these dangerous tar blobs, one at a time. I got two on me and was wiped out this morning. My whole epic adventure of recovering my stuff is the subject for another thread. All that...for shingles?

you can empty the tar crater and find much more tar.
Use your pickaxe to make a channel for the fluid tar to flood away. Inside the old crater are tar spots, where you can find much more. I think my first crater got me around 70 tar.
