Re: Portals

I had a question regarding portals before I spend a bunch of materials setting them up all over the map.

It is my understanding you cannot bring a cart through a portal, but what about items in your inventory? If I loaded my inventory with as much copper and tin as I can carry can I use the portal to transport it back to base?

It's a long walk and I really do not want to have to lug all the stuff back to base in the cart.
😒

I disliked the portals from the beginning and did not use them at all, now i learned and use them a bit more, but mainly to get faster to bosses.
I like building roads, esp. in the swamp it‘s pretty handy.

Use a mod to allow metals through portals.

Well, that sucks. That means I cannot use them for the one thing that would have made them the most useful. 🤨

A better option, and sorta the way the devs figured people would play it, is to set up your smelting items at the outpost near your dig site. Your smelter and coal kiln and workbench / forge etc, can all be broken down and reclaimed for a complete "refund" of materials and set up in other places, so you lose nothing to pick those items up... I mean unless you WANT to try to cut roads across the map each time you have to travel further and further away as you progress to new biomes.

Smelt your ingots etc at the dig site and use forge to craft your items. When you are ready to advance to the next biome (and new resources), simply break down the work stations and move them to the new area... repeat.

Of course place portals at each outpost so you can teleport home or teleport back to outpost if you happen to die, and need to recover your gear.

At the same time not being able to teleport ores/metals requires players to get out of their nests and see the world. I've never discovered anything hopping between portals. I can't help but think this was a primary factor by the devs in setting it up this way.

Since I like to build it also gives me the opportunity to keep trying out new base styles (as noted by GunsForBucks).

I hear there are mods to change portal mechanics so that may be your best bet.

Just craft everything you need as close as possible to your mining site. It doesn't need to be all in your main base. Then you don't need to haul as much stuff.

you can play with your character on a solo map: put ore in your inventory, switch to solo world, off load ore, switch to online/main world, go through portal, switch to solo world, put ore in inventory, switch to online/main world, voila. you've just transported ore "through a portal"

I only play with one mod, at that allows ores to go through portals.
People claiming you won't explore because you do this don't know what they are talking about. It isn't really exploring when you are just taking the same route back and forth on your ship. Since I don't have to deal with that, it actually leaves me more time to go exploring and see the world. But to each their own.

No you cannot transport metal ores through a portal. You need to walk or use a cart/ship.

Look at the icon of an item in your inventory. You can see a small symbol with a red slash through it. That means you can not teleport it. There are a few key items in game that can not be teleported.

This is kind of a key point in that if you want to make transport less of an issue you need to scout out the resources and build bases accordingly.

That said you will still want portals around. Like having a refining base with a portal back to the source so you can return and repair immediately and just have to carry out. For example I have a silver facility at the base of a mountain on a copper node so I could make a forge and upgrade stuff. Teleport up the mountain and dig out silver, run it down and load up the smelter and it will process the ore while I teleport back up to get more. Make for a pretty efficient operation.
