i wish building was easier.

the big problem i'm having is making the ground the same height and lining up the supports so that i can build as high as possible for a huge base. right now i'm working on the supports and flooring but i keep getting issues where the floor turns green even though i've already paved the flooring. the snap feature is there but it doesn't seem very willing. and it's sometimes hard to put supports under flooring aswell. having a hard time building a large base while smaller bases are easy.

The trick with iron and stone is that the supporting iron needs to be snapped in place lining up perfectly with the bottom of the stone. Stone doesn't accept support from anything slightly embedded in its lower surface.

Or to get above them using ladders.

I always build a stone foundation now. I will sink the 2x4 stone wall pieces into the ground so the top of them is just barely visible. I can't remember if the game allows one to do this without using the Valheim Plus mod. Although it took me awhile to get to understand how V+ works, I could never go back to building without all its advanced building features.

I'm building a large stone castle in the mountains currently and I'm having huge success with the iron rods as framework for my walls and floors. I am doing double walls as well, so the grid of rods is sandwiched between the two walls. If something breaks, I literally just stuff as many iron rods in as I can and then put a new piece back in. It's been working so far! Lol

I did reach the limit earlier on height, but it's pretty massive so I'm happy.

under "quick question yesterday many people replied.to a similar question .mine was "yes some of the building takes a bit to understand.. in the shortest possible explanation foundations when placed.. if you hover over them and wait a bit they will stay blue. (ie good!) whereas walls and roof sections once placed start off blue then after a while if you hover over them or wait and watch.. they change thru to red sometimes and then after red they collapse.. (this is relative to how far from foundation they are..ie higher closer to red)
Also adding "normal" ie irl bracing does nothing to help in fact the opposite often where the additional load on walls etc turns them red (ie use hammer and hover over them) there are many detailed explanations of using stone iron etc in a construction in here. sadly i dont have those links any more some one may post them"

yeah, right now i'm building with iron poles and stone flooring, i plan on building a bigger base since my old one's too small. i want it to be really big but even though i might manage to make the floor fully blue eventually, idk how to actually keep the color good afterwards. i'm guessing just placing stone walls on top of the flooring won't be good.

If working with stone; what I like to do is sink it partially into the ground by building the first piece on a bit of ground that is just slightly lower in elevation, so I've got some leeway with imperfections on what's supposed to be a flat ground. With wood floors, I prefer the option where the floor is about 0.5m above the ground and supported by 1m wood beams. (higher, and 1m supports might not be enough in some places, lower and it gets very hard to place the supports)
(also, when leveling terrain, stand on a bit of terrain that you want the other terrain to match in height to)

Beyond making sure the ground floor is all even, frame+roof is what I do next, and then everything else will fall into place and should be supported.

thanks for the tips.
talking of stone though, do you know how to build after placing the floor? i'm almost finished with the flooring now, but worried that if i just place stone walls on top of the flooring that it'll turn green and disallow me to build it very tall? do i need some sort of support system around walls to reinforce them?

You'll need to use iron supports if you want stone walls higher then otherwise possible, but eventually you will reach a point where you can't get higher, and then all you can do is build wood on top of the stone (the first piece of wood should be blue) and continue on with that.

Another option is to raise the ground in select places, as high as possible. Trim down the edges if needed and hide the entire thing with walls, making it appear as some kind of thick pillar. Then from these ground pillars, you can build fresh iron supports to carry nearby stone walls even higher.

ah i see, i had not thought of that, thanks.
i know u can use trees in the swamp and the stone pillars that are in the plains biome, but wanted a safe place.

i'll definitely try raising the ground maybe in certain areas.
and in the future i'll also try out a pillar.

what do you mean by trim down the edges?

Use the pickaxe to try and get the form of the rock you want. It takes a little practice to get spikes, but you can always raise the ground and try again if you don't get one.
