I am concerned with "Feature Bloat" regarding the game.
Edit: This is not another "H&H bad lol" thread, please don't rush in full defense mode; I'm not attacking the game and its current form, this is only a concern on the quality and the quantity of the future content.
"Feature bloat is when too many features are packed into a design, resulting in a product that is 'bloated' or stuffed with unnecessary elements. ... This results in products that are complicated, confusing or hard to use." - 5 second Google search
Now, don't come at me saying things like "don't like it, don't play it" or "git gud". This is not a rant on problems the game currently faces, or an opinion post. This is a concern about the game's increase in content and how it could make the game more complicated than it should be.
Complicated, of course, as in "what is the point of all this?" and "why do I have to do all of that?", not as in difficulty. More does not always equal better; smithing chainmail armor in real life is extremely time consuming and can be awfully tedious if you're not very enthusiastic about smithing. So should we make the process of smithing armor in the game just like in real life?
Of course, well implemented and polished content is always welcome and it's great to have a game that can provide hours and hours of fun. I'm not saying it should have less content. But, it's kind of like shaping a sword; a simple, straight blade will cut and do just as promised, but if you fill that poor thing with curves, spikes and holes, it'll become rather complicated to use and all that "content" will become a nuisance.
I'm already noticing a pattern coming in with the most recent update. Hearth & Home swapped the simple food system with something more complex that would require you to spend more time planning how you consume food in the game, making the game in general a bit more complex. It's not that bad and the devs did a proper good job at balancing it, but they have already taken a step towards making the game more complicated, diverging from simple. And sometimes, complicated = tiresome, boring, unfun. Not saying the update was bad, of course.
I just don't want the game to become a chore to play. And I hope the new content we get is fun, too. That's the point in games after all. I love Valheim and that's why I have concerns about it.
TL;DR: More ≠ Better. Please focus on quality and not on quantity, for future updates.

A "pattern" would dictate that IronGate has a history of creating something that is 'unnecessary' deeming it as bloatware. Since H&H is Valheim's first major update, how did you conclude a pattern here?
Furthermore, according to Valheim's roadmap, the updates within H&H was already planned out. So the 'new' food system was intentional from the get-go. The only reason why many people complained about it, was because they expected a Beta game to be a post-Early Access Version 1.0 game. The complainers whined about the update, because they wanted a bare-bones difficulty with all the goodies that come with a version 1.0 release.

This game has nothing that resembles "feature bloat". To be honest, feature bloat is synonymous with ubishat and other "AAA" publishers. This game is far from anything like that.

I didn't say the game is currently feature bloated. I just said that I hope it doesn't get bloated. The new update kind of steps into that territory and I'm getting a bit scared of the game diving deeper into it. This game has nothing that resembles "feature bloat". But its not even close to feature bloating. They took an unfinished mechanic and fleshed it out. This is an early access game, they aren't changing mechanics just to change them, these are the ways the devs envisioned the mechanics becoming when they had time eventually.

Best not to feed the trolls folks. I'm sure this individuals overly articulated concerns would be met with critical conversation if it weren't for the fact that they have no basis in reality whatsoever.
Better not to engage.
*edit : After re-reading this I think my deeming the OP a troll may have been a bit too harsh.
I should also like to add that i sure hope that Iron gate does not fall victim to the easy pleasure that is robbing banks. They have shown an appreciation for capital gain with making such a fine game, and we all know it's a slippery slope.
Just saying, hope it doesn't happen.

That is a long way to say that you dont like the food change O.o
From the store page
"A brutal exploration and survival game for 1-10 players, set in a procedurally-generated purgatory inspired by viking culture. Battle, build, and conquer your way to a saga worthy of Odin’s patronage!"
Game is hardly brutal and the survival part is very tame, in most survival games you need to spend ages to craft food so your avatar doesn't die, in this game food is a buff.
Players get upset as they 'farm' tonnes of food, make huge farms, massive boar operations... you dont NEED to do that to get anywhere, you can if you want but all this massive farming is not a requirement to progress.
You can just have a small farm, enough to craft some good food to buff your HP and/or Stamina, you can hunt enough to keep up.
Part of the issue is the way the food system was at launch, too simple, just use BIS and off you go... then sit in the forums and complain about lack of content :P
Other than the food system, I dont see any change that was made more complicate than previous... some mechanics added to help players, like the puke berries and the obliterator, to get rid of food so you can change up and to destroy unwanted items.

Rather harsh indeed, I don't intend on provoking anyone. I tried my best to keep the post civil and welcoming to discussion but it seems that people are a bit too defensive that they end up seeing anything that's not praise as destructive criticism. But I appreciate that you gave the time to reconsider, very few people would do that. Thank you. Best not to feed the trolls folks. Again, this is no criticism on what's already set. This isn't another one of those "H&H sucks lol" posts. Talking about the future here, worrying about Iron Gate adding more than they should and making the game too complicated. Valheim is a good game and I hope it stays good in the next years.

Again, this post is not another critic towards H&H! I'm just worried about the devs adding too much unnecessary stuff into the game and making it too complex to play practically. That is a long way to say that you dont like the food change O.o

imho valheim is far,far away from beein "bloated" in any way
the devs have plans for content to be added and the empty biomes are need to be filled.
for an title in development valheim world pretty good and when compared to many AAA titles that failed in the end valheim is on a good way to keep things uncomplicated and straight forward
if player fails - the player have done something wrong or is moving thru the wrong biome

Valhiem if anything is feature light! It will take a really long time and some seriously massive updates to bloat it, it is not even fleshed out yet!
There are so many complaints on the forums about how it is too simple, and you are worried about it being made complicated. I suppose the world is full of all types.
I for one hope they continue to add content and make it more complicated, give us more chance to apply a uniqueness to our game style. I would like classess, I would like more skills like farming to make stamina usage less or crops grow faster. I would like food and consumables to have the ability to be good or superior quality through a cooking skill or an alchemy skill so all those other activities we do in game help.
I would love them enable more customisation to boats so we could decorate them with the skulls of our foes like serpants. Add more water based enemies, add more type of enemy combat so a dirt wall cant protect against everything (not that I use it).
There is still plenty of room for natural growth without bloat, so don't get ahead of yourself worrying about things that are years down the road.

It can't get more logical than this.
One data point does not reveal a pattern.

I'm curious what your take is on other big names in the genre like ARK. In comparison Valheim doesn't even hold a candle. Every survival game gets it's version of the H&H update, I don't see the need for any of your concerns tbh.

I surely know plenty of bloated games that would be better for some people if they didn't have a massive quantity of low quality content. I just think Valheim should focus on having well polished, fun content rather than having a lot of features so it seems complete. I can say the current features are good (although obtaining ore besides tin and black metal is awfully tedious and could be improved upon), but I hope they don't go too far and turn the game into an MMORPG filled with quantity > quality dumptruckload of unnecessary stuff. We can all agree with this, right? I'm curious what your take is on other big names in the genre like ARK. In comparison Valheim doesn't even hold a candle. "the food change" should have been in the game when it launched, they said that themself, but there was to mutch to do... hold the game 1 year more or fix it under way. Well if it would be ingame from start, people wouldent complain so mutch :)

I get where the concerns are comming from. If i would develop a game, adding food items, and reworking the health/stamina system, would be one of my least priorities considering the game is far from polished or done in the gameplay department.
Sure its nice to give players a few new building blocks to play with and the like, and i get that the developers want to keep people interested that are playing right now.
But the whole idea of ''we work on what we feel like at the time, and what comes to mind'' cant be a great way to make a good game.
Before Valheim got popular, the developers also had to make the basis of the game from the ground up. Decide on key game mechanics, code world generation, and so on. I think they should realy focus on those aspects and finish them first, if they want Valheim to be a great game a few years from now.
I dont think this has a whole lot to do with ''future bloat'' as OP descibed, but a concern in the same direction non the less.
