Plus you never know when an update will suddenly add a use for stacks of anything.

No doubt. I've drained an entire storage building filled with dark iron chests of stone in a day. Same with wood.

Electricdawn, you are a nutjob for hoarding flint. You know obsidian is plentiful as hell once you reach iron age and far superior. As the kids say "Flint iz teh suxxors."

I haven't even beaten Bonemass yet, and my gear is not good enough for mountains. So far I haven't seen any obsidian in the swamps.

So, yes, once I get that, I might not need flint anymore. ;)

Edit: Oh yeah, Iron Age you need gunk. Farm it. You want it.

That is an odd list. Why are you hoarding
- flint stones? the only use after your 2 workbench items and axe are low quality arrows (compared to fire).
- beech seeds. A few, ok, but you will be planting birch and oak to get fine wood (portals drain it fast). Not much point in a beech grove to me?
- all kinds of leather. Troll hide is totally useless after you have the armor, and maybe one stack spare for decoration or whatever uses come along? Deer and boar hides are also useless after some point.
- abomination roots (after armor done, what now?)

I guess what I am saying is that you hoard things that you consume constantly: wood (fire, arrows, coal, house, lots!) and start tossing things you don't use anymore after that era (50 stacks of flint stones?!).

you did miss iron age: coal. Maybe your swamp didn't have a fire thingy. You also left off sut cores, for portals, though those can become too many really fast. Maybe you define hoard differently than I do... I was thinking > 1 stack of it.

I like flint arrows. I'm not technically hoarding them, I just find a lot of them, so I keep them. And I ALWAYS need wood. So I plant a new tree every time I fell one. That's why I need beech seeds.
Troll leather, I farm troll leather till everything's up to level 3. Technically I don't need it anymore then. So I really don't farm it after that. I just have a reserve for... you know, just in case. ;)
Same goes for root armor.

And yeah, I TOTALLY forgot coal and surtling cores. Although coal comes from wood, so technically I do not need to hoard it, since I can produce it.

Surtling cores, absolutely need to hoard them.

I didn't elaborate the point i was trying to make properly.

See, i was elevating more land in order to expand my base. This requires tons, TONS, of stone and because i didn't have any more in stock, i had to take time to mine stone instead of investing all that time in building.

In summation, because i didn't have stone in stock i had to waste time bouncing from mining to building instead of focusing entirely on building.

I had to put "walls" of upraised ground around my base after 3 trolls nearly destroyed it in a raid. I ran out of stone, and had to go mountains to deliberately mine more stone (like the OP). Even the base of my hall is more stone ground upraised into "walls" (it's hollow, my hall has a "basement" workshop area).

These "walls" are completely indestructible by the way.

I mean... I just stack stone outside inside each other. No need to waste precious chest space.

I mean, i hoard litterally everything in extreme abundance regardless. But stone is easy to get.. esp once you can smack down golems like they are nothing or knock over the giant stone pillars in the plains. Its also a huge byproduct of silver mining in particular. But if i recall copper mining dredged up quite a bit as well.

The one thing i regret tossing? Eyes... i never thought i'd need more then a full iron chest. But here we are. Content updates can drastically change what is and is not consumed. So its best to just enbrace your inner hoarder and save everything.
