Think of it as more as a night light.

what even is the benefit of light? I run around without lights quite often, so it really escapes me why people go for things like this.

It can get stupid dark in fog and in crypts under combat situations. I generally didn't bother even then, mainly because the headlamp has terrible armor property, but I started using one around the base for complex building projects, chief of which became placing and rotating underwater blocks on barely reachable terrain in foul weather for dock building in storms, fog, on a raft, night, etc. Also harvesting and planting at night is more comfortable with a headlamp and this kind of thing.

It's more that I'm doing massive rows of turnips, carrots, onions, barely and flax and running speed lines of them spamming E in the dark and bad weather to make blocks of 50 plants quickly. You plant the tiny dark green leafy thing too close to a wall, other plants or what have you and it dies and you waste the seed.

I can already see many uses for this. Path markers, etc, would be a great use for this. All depends on where the armor stand can be placed.

Now lets hope the devs don't "fix" this.

Dragon eggs does not require gold, but you can bring them to the base one at time.

I just tried putting the circlet on a armor stand as suggested. You really need to try it to see just how different it is from trying to use yellow mushrooms or Dragon eggs. It won't be as good as a dragon egg to mark the water approach to the pier as I originally thought but well worth the cost in my book for what else I will use it for. And it isn't like there is much else to use the gold on in the game right now anyway once you buy a couple belts (i always keep a spare on hand for corpse runs) and the mats for Frostner and the obliterator.

Only thing I'm not happy about is even at 10 nails per ingot I'm going to I'm going to need a lot more iron for all the armor stands i'm going to be building now :)
