permadeath speed run
now this is a challenge... so far run number four has been my best. died on day 55. took out the ground troops from my boat as i approached bonemass's altar. thought i was clear to put down a portal so i jumped to shore and was almost immediately attacked by an abomination & several starred skeles. couldn't get a portal down fast enough, so dodged behind some trees to get the abomination off my tail, BAM hit with poison from a leech. stamina's dropping fast, and here comes a pair of draugr archers from deeper in the swamp. whap whap stams gone, and then the skeley comes in for the final blow.

run five: died on day 15 to the elder. should have waited another day for a few more carrots, and maybe gone up a level on the armor.

Have not tried a no bosses run yet. Need to perfect my 'Troll' mining skills first I think.
I'm currently on my "no portals - no bosses" run, and I'm having a lot of fun. You just have much more freedom, you don't have to follow a certain progression, but you still have to plan ahead, much more in fact then when using portals.
Troll mining is actually not that hard. Just get on one side of whatever you want to mine, let the Troll approach you and do a dodge roll backwards at the last second when it starts swinging.
Works for both copper and tin.
Iron is MUCH harder to mine, I just get enough so I can make the pickaxe. Silver is easy in comparison (even though you often get a visit from Mr. Stone Golem. Maybe even two).

My first try at a perma run ended in the swamp, Not to mobs per se, but to poison. So I feel your pain.
Fight was over, all the attackers were defeated and all I could do was watch as my remaining health ticked down in a green mist (yeah, no potions as I figured I really didn't need them...yet)
But these 'rogue-like' runs just make you want to jump back in, start anew and not make the same mistakes you jut did.

Running away in the swamp almost always ends badly. You need to stand still and kill whatever you have agro'd. At that point in the game you should be able to 1 shot skele (depending your weapon) and the abom is easily dodged for a melee kill, no need to try get a portal down to escape.
The first 2 zones teach you bad habits because nothing really punishes you so players get to the swamp and think running around half a biome shooting arrows is the solution to almost everything, it isn't.
Speed run is about 8 real life hours last I looked btw.
did a speed run a while ago and got yagluth at day 87. not sure how many rl hours that was though so the benchmark i'm working off is in game days. but that run was without permadeath. i'm finding that combining the two is certainly an interesting challenge. the tension between speed and caution really amps it up.

Yep, permadeath is not for the faint of heart. Or slightly older people with not so quick reflexes, like me. ;)
That's why I've never tried them and probably never will. No portals/no bosses runs? That's more up my alley.
Still wishing you good luck on your next try!

Permadeath yes (at least my house rules +1 respawn allowed per Forsaken Power gained due to playing when I'm.. not all there so to speak) really makes a difference; speed running however is not for this old timer :)
Cheers though, good luck and have fun!
Edit: Urggh: speaking of which; just died to a Troll thrown rock as I was approaching to atgeir him... sigh.. oh well counting this one as permadeath due to earlier self induced death (swimming malfunction at 4AM). Was exploring and got Karve stuck on rock at night, disembarked to push off and small island has... Troll.. should've won that fight just ate the rock stupidly.
