Just bought the game and my new character already got deleted and replaced by a "stranger"
Literally just got the game played it all night actually having fun, just entered a crypt for surtling stones and decided so sleep. Opened up my game to see my character replaced by "stranger". I didn't even know of this glitch and lost a night of progress I was mid way of taming my two babies Silly and Willy the two boars and now I'm ranting but I seriously don't know if I want to return to this game. I love it so far but a bug that completely erases all of my progress is a total letdown of the game for me.

It happens from time to time. If you played more than 2 hours, steam won't refund you

The game goes an auto save every 30mins or so, but you can force it to happen by typing the save world cmd into the console. You will need to look up how to access it but yeah that should be of help.

Disable Steam Cloud and make sure to back up the data folder:
On the startup screen there is a white button labeled "View log file." When clicked, it opens the file explorer in the Valheim data folder. Go up to the parent folder, "Irongate" and back up the "Valheim" folder.
It's in the data path that any backup program should be backing up, so if you make daily backups, there is a good chance you can recover your character.
