There is always small abandoned villages in all meadows. You can throw a workbench and bed small fire in oneof them , have lots all over the place they good to use if you go that way again. But take your time and enjoy the journey. Thats th ebest way to learn and prepare and have fun.

Personally I would say the exact opposite. Exploring on foot is much more exciting. Sailing is for looking for new biomes.
