There should be boxes floating with the stuff in storage. They should not move away.

Did you have a workbench near to prevent despawn? It sounds like it shouldn't matter if the boat parts were there.. but you never know, thought I would ask.

Are you sure there was stuff in storage? The floating boxes should have been right on top of the boat parts. You have to interact with the floating boxes to get the stuff.
