Man I've been using the spear a lot as well, I almost never threw it for that very reason. I think it needs to be considered.
Maybe making the spear a cheaper and weaker weapon when used as melee, but stackable and very powerful when thrown? Just writing this as the idea came through my mind but I have no idea how balanced and viable this is
