I spend very little time actually crafting anything, gathering stuff so I can craft what I need.. well that's about 33% to 50% of the game (depends on stage). However, even in the earliest period you're liable to get attacked by a horde of wild boars or baby alligator things so combat is a part. So is exploration which often results in combat and/or running away and hopefully not dying.
At each stage you have to defeat the boss of that stage (called biome in game) in order to progress - usually has some widget or thingy you need to go further but also gives you a 'Forsaken Power' which may (or may not) be useful. Travel is a big part of the early game but in the second biome you'll unlock portals which will help for everything except ores and ingots.
As far as creativity required.. eh.. mostly early on I just remodel broken down shacks and stuff I find. There's guides aplenty for that, and you don't have to do all that much if you don't want to. Biggest thing is getting the stuff to make the things that let you make weapons, armor, food, potions (meads/wines in game), and tools. Its pretty straightforward and you automatically get new recipes for stuff when you pick up the materials for them.
There's a lot of atmosphere in the game, like I just built a ship to sail around the island I was on, only takes a click once you have everything. So I started off, bright shining morning, sailing down around the south west coast... at least that was the plan. The weather turned to mist, I somehow got too far away from the coast and ended up in the ocean, it got dark and stormy. I made towards land as quickly as I could because that's monster weather in Valheim and I really wasn't prepared.
Didn't see any monsters but banged the ship up on some rocks in the storm that I didn't see either. Finally said the heck with this, turned around, fought the wind, tacked and rowed back to my starting point. Didn't get back till after dark, was cold wet and miserable. Beached the boat and salvaged it for the materials, Got back to my safe house, dried off, and slept through the rest of the night. Fortunately there was no raid that night.
So, hard to say if that's too much crafting for you and not enough PvE and monster fighting. For me it's a good balance.
Good Luck, Have Fun!
