the first boss lets you make a pick. That is all you get ... then you have to use the pick, as directed by the crow, to get metals. And as noted you will need dungeons, which can be dangerous, to get the forge. I advise having fire arrows in the dungeon, in case you get something meaner than a grumpy skeleton inside.
