I use a Mod AutoFeed.
That saves me throwing food a thousand times until it finally stays there, i love this mod

That system with beams do not work since july bro , it work with you because you are using an auto feed mod , from that july's update animals needs a 4x4 floor to feed ( food most be in the same floor as them and a minimal space to move )
Anyway i already did my tower , ill see later if works with wolves and another big one for loxs
