Not sure if this is a game issue.
I mean most games nowadays make sure you can't die, even if you try hard,... but I for one love to see stuff actually doing what I would expect it to do. A balista certainly SHOULD kill you with a direct hit.

I was standing like ~30ft away from the thing when it fired and i wasnt even directly in front of it. When you place the ballista, it rotates like 45 degrees left and right searching for stuff to kill. Honestly didn't expect it to shoot at me.

Ballista can target the player as well.

Imo this need to change. Player should only get hit by there ballista if they get in the line of fire.

But not be targeted by it. Makes it pointless as a defensive weapon. Traps tho are one thing
