When I first played the game, multiplayer was ok-ish but had several lag issues, desync and even disconnection, both on client hosted server and rented dedicated servers.

There is a youtuber who runs a cluster of map seeds called Jiroc the Viking and seems to do well with it, even to the point of charging people to play on his cluster.
