On my two worlds I play on I got lucky and there was already stone towers nearby Haldor. A couple iron ingots for stone cutters later, I repaired them both and turned them into nice and relatively protected outposts, at least from the usual denizens of the Black Forest. Definitely worth having a reinforced portal base to reach Haldor.
