Once you have a hammer, you can build the workbench and other things.

The workbench will show you what recipes you can work with and what you need for them. Unlocking new recipes simply requires you to collect new materials ;)

Some play with friends, others like me do play solo and that's perfectly doable ;)
Resources are almost limitless and you cannot really die, so go out and explore the world and learn... I wish you success ;)
