Maybe they should cut that decay in half. It's that... Metal takes a loooong time to decay in real life, so for gameplay purposes it makes more sense for it to decay faster. Still, you should try keeping your iron and wood structures sheltered.

What I've done is placed stone blocks on top of the bars. I put a 2x1 stone block, a large vertical set of bars, then balance another 2x1 stone block on top. It seems to eliminate the decay times, or at least greatly reduce them. I noticed when this happened that it only seemed to happen to *some* of the bars, which is why I thought maybe I was experiencing some kind of glitch. It also happened while I was in the process of setting the sections up, so I had the bars in place, but not the top layer of stone.
