It sounds more like the OP jumped over a trench they made and fell in taking 50 damage.Real life high jump/long jump athletes injure themselves all the time and that's jumping and landing in super safe controlled conditions not out in the wilds carry a hundred lbs of gear.
High jumpers also land on their backs/shoulders and long jumpers land on their butts. I suspect if the player characters did this then they'd die immediately, all their buildings would collapse and they'd have to return to the origin with all their skills reset. Anyway what they said is true, it's not like the einherjar jump suddenly becomes laden with 100 pounds of metal and poor footing mid-air, the injury from the jump is purely from the vertical acceleration of the collision which rarely significantly exceeds the magnitude of the acceleration of the jump.
Sure, if you're jumping face-first off a steep hill into some jagged brush or rocky terrain, you'd be crazy not to expect some pain, but the corresponding injuries from reality (being cut up or rolling through repeated blunt injuries all over your body) do not occur in the game. Your guy just lands stiff-legged, goes "ow" and then regenerates his/her femurs with a few bites of rotting intestine he had earlier in a couple of seconds.
