I never bothered with moats. I also like to build nice houses, farms, taverns and I also think that moats are butt ugly. :D

Trolls don't bother me in the least. When the alarm comes, I run out, kite them away from the buildings, wait till the two minutes are over, then kill them quickly with my abyssal dagger.
