You need ancient bark to unlock the root armor so chop down some ancient trees too.
You make root armor on the workbench. And when you have some extra iron bars
make nails; that will unlock some furniture and most importantly the longboat.

I have ancienbark but I have no new crafteble items in the workbench/forge
