I used troll armor through the swamp, switched to fully upgraded iron before fighting Bonemass, and quickly replaced that with Wolf armor. I found kiting trolls and sneaking in caves and stabbing them in the back much less tedious than hauling copper and tin. I only used bronze for weapons and tools to get me to iron.
