It's understandable that the first troll raid will come as a shock for new players who haven't been on the forums or read the guides. It is possible to just kite them around for two minutes and generally keep them away from your stuff, but there's a lot that the game doesn't tell you.

You can see stake walls in the build menu and you think that's the way, and that maybe you'll get something that will work better later on. Other games do level up their defense offerings as the threats get harder. This game doesn't really. I'm sure that very few new players figure out that the trench completely breaks pathing for anything that walks and that walls are mostly for decoration, breaking line of sight, or to slow things down while you kite them away.
