Dang, I must've gotten lucky because the first swamp I entered there were 9 crypts, literally all in a circle within 50 meters from each other.

After clearing them out, I filled almost 2 longboats full of Iron.

You probably just got super unlucky with your seed. You'll have to really work for that iron gear, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Having everything come easy takes the fun away.
