Just to note, this is not the case with any tames. Workbenches are irrelevant. Proximity to your avatar is what matters.

Yeah, you just have to be within game loading distance. You can walk around, chop trees or whatever. You don't have to stand right next to them. If you can see them walking around, that's close enough.
