One characteristic relating to player count is it's a business motivation for the devs/publisher to keep putting money/effort into the game.

On a game like this "player count" doesn't matter as much as "sales count" and with the stellar sales count generated in just the first 2 months of it's introduction on Steam, the devs should be "motivated" until around 2053 LOL
