I am with you, you should never feel like you MUST mod a game. But the reality is that many, many games have community patches that fix bugs the devs never get (never will for many games) to. Here, at least you can say the game is basically in beta and we don't know what all they will fix when it is fully done but until they do, you can either work around it or use the mod.
it does work; its annoying but once you get the hang of it you can certainly attach stuff from below. Sitting down to craft can help, as can bogus parts and other tricks, or just patience. I have no mods and have built all kinds of very nice buildings and yes, some of it, from below though I avoid that as much as I can.
I respect, even admire the modders. I used to do it, even back when you hacked on compiled files with a hex editor. I just choose to not use a lot of mods, because too often I have ruined games with them (save files break, updates break, instability and problems, etc). I lack the time to do them anymore and I lack the patience to deal with the consequences when the game updates and the mods break and all that mess. Its just my choice.
