Set up a minimum of 2 portals @ your base. 1 has no name and is your temp portal when you go exploring etc. while carrying a portal with you in your inventory. The second one is your dial portal that is kinda like stargate where you can travel to all your portals by dialing in their name. You really don't need anything else. You can have a third one that is named that you will use when you encounter one of your portals in the field that is not currently dialed in if you want to go home. Setting up new portals without hassle is using the small delay a portal has when you change their name.
