No I mean so the server can dump log files and crap and run optimally. it's just a momentary restart and it carries on where it saved last.

This - the most fervent worshiper of Murphy's Law is the God of Online Server Crashes. This God has cyberdemons that report when it is the most opportune time to crash in order to screw up with the biggest mess. Regular server saves can mitigate this to some degree. From what I've heard S.H.I.E.L.D. has an entire team looking into this.
