Upgrade is already there, you just don't use it. The upgrade is accessed by loading up with lumber and hammer, log out, create new world, log into it, build bunches of chests, log out.

To use your newly upgraded portal, take your ore to the portal, pick it up, log out, log in to your warehouse world, deposit ore in chest(s), log back in to regular world, go through portal, log out, log in to warehouse world pick up ore from chest(s), log out, log in to normal world and there you have it, upgraded portal ore moving operation complete.

Oh.. you want it automated? There are these things called mods.

Otherwise this subject has been discussed to death. Pretty sure the devs have said it isn't going to ever happen in vanilla.
