The wolf event is enabled by killing bonemass, and is not disabled by anything.

The key (at least for me) in surviving the wolves is to use the bonemass ability. If you're caught low on food, or with insufficient armor, it can be tough to get enough health to survive initially, but with a bit of health, good armor, and a good weapon, along with bonemass, it shouldn't be a problem.

If you're in the plains, you're actually lucky. just run to the closest lox or fulling village and let them take care of them. :-)
