That sounds like something trolls do as well. I dug a pit to trap wolves (I'm still little and I can only run up the side of a mountain a little way before I start to lose health too much). I had a troll chase me and I jumped into my pit and the troll just stood there looking down at me while I peppered him to death with fire arrows.
