You don't need a moat, you don't need to raise earthen walls. Even the palisades are only good to protect your lifestock. The spikes are good to thin the attackers, but not much more.

The only thing you really NEED is a good thick wooden or stone wall between you and the attackers.

This is of course only against "normal" raids. Trolls, you need to get out and spank them. Should be less of a problem once you reach a certain level.
