In order to combat this I made a base next to the ocean. Built a water mote filled with spikes, then surrounded that with pikes, made a dirt/stone wall in front of that with pikes in front of that so if they do try to get to me they have to go via the ocean which makes them really really slow. So then I just stand and pick them off without my base taking any damage. But to be safe I put pikes in the ocean as well. Using 7 Days To Die tactics with just wooden pike everything to stop or slow down enemies before getting to my base.
