The stone blocks are fully 3d cuboids where most wooden pieces are effectively 2d cardboard cutouts. They're pretty easy to place embedded into the ground, especially the 2x2x1 flooring block.

The stonecutter does need two iron ingots so that's a swamp run but not necessarily a deep one - the larger ooze creatures drop iron ore, or you can find deposits in the steep slope where a swamp meets mountain.
