This seems most likely. I believe you need a workbench spread out every 40 meters or so, but someone can confirm or deny that.

Does not have to be a workbench. Almost all interactable buildings stop spawn. Including unlit torches (idk about doors and chests). The range is spherical afaik, so 40m will likely leave gaps, as its the bench max range. I'd do it every 30m or so... you can see how much is that by placing a ward (and hitting something).
