The trick is to dig deeper. Stand in a hole or ditch, and hit the lower point on a wall with your pickaxe, and it will dig out a lot of ground. The pickaxe quality does not matter, and it would be wise to use the Antler Pickaxe for digging because it costs the least stamina to use per swing.
