If you start with a piece of raised ground and then plant a pine tree on top of it, you can get very tall. Anything attached to ground or to a tree counts as the strongest supported level. As others have said, core wood, stone and iron wood are stronger than plain wood.

If you really want to have fun, get a mod that removes the building restrictions.
