Are you using any mods? Did this occur pre-patch, post patch, or both?

Pre-patch at least if your base was HUGE (large enough that the outside work benches didn't render) you could wind up with a situation where things spawned in the outer workbench area. In that situation the spawns were far enough away from you that you were outside their perception radius and they wouldn't attack. You had to go rebuild the outside workbenches after the raid ended but nothing else got destroyed.
