You don't "place" them ... you equip them in your hotbar and press the corresponding number while standing at the altar.... If that doesnt work, then Im out of ideas of what it could be... never seen that message before at the altars.

Put the trophies in one of your shorcut (1 to 8) and then press that shortcut while facing the altar (that's why the tooltip that pop up when facing the altar says shortcut 1-8).
