you can just drop them at a spot. its a bit of a pain to do that because if not careful you pick it back up unwanted sometimes, but if its out of your way like the far corner of a big table, it kinda works.
I did not try it but it may also count as offhand on an armor rack (?) if you want to try that.

by mistlands you really shouldn't have any shortage or trouble getting chain but it would be nice to put them on a table etc.
