My gamma was a bit too dark during the day <real day not in game> so I adjusted it a tiny bit mostly due to anime watching. That has brightened the caves up a little in game but they are still dark and require a torch/light in areas to see clearly.

Maybe you adjusted your gamma outside of the game? I don't think the devs changed anything in that regard.
