Only played SP and the game offers enough flexibility so that even someone with little to no combat skills (i.e. me) can still defeat enemies by going through what is sometimes referred to as "the grind" of upgrading nutrition and equipment. Again, no authority on MP but I understand that enemy hit points are increased in coop mode to give some balance.
